The Writer Magazine's Free Editing Webinar

Greetings everyone!

This morning I was able to attend an online webinar titled "Summer School 2: Learning to Love Revision," which was hosted by The Writer magazine (and sponsored by ProWritingAid). Our presenter was Nicki Porter, who is the Senior Editor at the The Writer magazine. I really enjoyed the webinar and decided to share some of my impressions here with you today.

First, I was especially interested in this webinar because I've spent the last nine months (ouch! has it really been that long?) attempting to self-edit the manuscript of my novel Timelines.
As my fellow writers know, editing your own work is hard. Really, really hard. I'm currently on the sixth draft and I've lost count of how many hours that I've spent working on it. Yet, it still feels far from complete. I still don't feel confident enough about the work to share it with other readers. My current plan is to release a "Beta Reader" Edition of the novel sometime this year. The catch is that I keep postponing releasing it since it doesn't feel "ready."

Nicki Porter's presentation was around 45 minutes long and then she finished up by offering a Q and A session for participants. She offered some really good advice as well as concrete things that we can do to improve our drafts. I especially liked how approachable she sounded. She emphasized that editing requires a lot of work and that we, as writers, need to be willing to sit down in our chairs and do the work. However, she maintained a positive attitude, and I felt "nurtured" by her tutoring. I also liked that she provided several different approaches and emphasized that everyone is different. Different writers will thrive using different approaches to writing and editing.

I finished the webinar this morning feeling really motivated. One thing that I got from the presentation is that I'm on track. Many of the things that Nicki Porter recommended were things that I was already doing. This made me feel much more confident about my current editing project. It turns out that the discouragement that I've been feeling seems to be based on my misconception that the editing is taking "too long." But, based on today's presentation, it sounds like I'm actually on track. Yes, the editing process is taking longer than expected; but, the time has been well spent. With every draft, my story has been getting better.

For those of you that are interested in concrete details, Nicki Porter began by talking about the two types of editing that every manuscript needs: Line Edits and Development Edits. She describes the first as "cleaning and polishing" (looking for typos, misplaced punctuation, etc) and the latter as "layering and building" (character motivation, pacing, plot holes, world building).

She emphasized the need to learn how to look at our writing analytically. She recommended practicing reviewing everything we read or watch with a "critical eye" to see what works or doesn't work and then using these observations to improve our own work.

During the presentation, Nicki Porter also discussed three different strategies for reviewing our writing, building our "revision toolkit," and not worrying about sometimes having to cut large sections of text from our drafts ("killing your darlings").

One particular bit of advise that she provided-- and I intend of trying later today-- was "Color-Code Your Draft." This method will help with pacing and creating a balanced draft. The basic idea was to go through your manuscript and use different colored highlighters. For example: highlight all of your dialogue in yellow, action in blue, setting in pink, backstory in purple, etc. Then, go back through your draft to see which colors are dominant and which ones are barely present. This can reveal problems with the draft. If you've got large chunks of backstory and very little action for instance.
The "Summer School 2: Learning to Love Revision" webinar was free to attend. It was the second of three that The Writer magazine will be hosting this summer. For those that are interested, you can sign up to receive email notifications from the magazine. A recording of today's presentation (along with Nicki Porter's slide presentation) will be available soon on the magazine webpage:

Etsy Sale!

Good morning!

Like many people around the world, the ongoing coronavirus crisis has had a big impact on my finances. Under normal conditions, I have three jobs (one traditional and two freelance). I work part time at a local public library, I write and sell my books (which includes giving book talks and history lectures), and I run a handmade craft business (which includes selling items both online and at local markets).

Since mid-March, all three of my jobs have come to a screeching halt. Technically, I still have books and crafts listed online; but, people have been more focused on purchasing staples and paying their basic bills.
In an attempt to (hopefully) get more online sales, I’m running several promotions through June 25th in my Etsy shop, Reprieve’s Corner:

25% Off Autographed Copies of My Books

30% Off of All Handmade Crafts and Craft Supplies

50% Off of items in my Clearance Section

Additionally, I’m offering free shipping on orders of $35 or more (US customers only).

Please, feel free to check out my Etsy shop and take advantage of these discounts.

Thank you! Stay healthy everyone!

Green Acres Grange Sale

Howdy!

Just a friendly reminder, this weekend is the Green Acres Grange Flea Market and Craft Fair. The market will be held on May 6th and 7th (Friday and Saturday) at the Green Acres Grange Hall. It is open to the public from 9 am until 4 pm.
There'll be a variety of vendors including both handmade crafts and affordable used items. There is also a small kitchen where they sell affordable hot lunches. They usually have donuts or muffins in the morning as well.

I'll be there with my books and a variety of handmade crafts. I also know that my friend, Jo Quackenbush, will be there with her "Crochet Blessings." She makes wonderful crocheted hats, scarves, and necklaces.
Come check it out! Mention this blog post and I'll give you 10% off your purchase at my booth.

Market opens!

Don't forget! The Coquille Valley Farmers Market opens tomorrow!

I'll be there with signed copies of my books and a variety of handmade crafts (including jewelry, wooden signs, plush toys, and greeting cards).

The market will be open every Saturday from April 16th until October 8th. Market hours are 9 am until 4 pm.

The market sets up on the grassy field at the old mill site. If you're coming from Coos Bay, turn right at the first traffic light.

See you there!

2016 Farmers Market Season

Spring greetings!

Here on the Oregon coast the weather seems to have finally transformed into spring. For a while there we were have nature's grab bag when it came to the weather. Within the same day we'd have sun, rain, hail, wind, maybe even a little thunder and lightening-- pretty much a little bit of everything. But, for the past few days the weather has been consistently warm and sunny. I think it's safe to say that spring has finally spring.

With the return of the warmer weather, I can't help but think ahead to the upcoming farmers market season. In the past, when I didn't have a "day job," I would set up my booth at multiple farmers markets within Coos County per week. But, I've been employed part time at the North Bend Public Library for nearly two years now. Last year, I made the mistake of over scheduling myself. As a result, I was exhausted by the end of the market season. So, this year I plan on cutting back on my markets.

Coquille Valley Farmers Market

I'm still in the planning stage, but I know for sure that I'll be selling at the Coquille Valley Farmers Market every Saturday (weather permitting!). The market is located on the grassy fields at the former mill site at the west end of town. Basically, if you're travelling from Coos Bay, all you have to do is turn right at the first traffic light as you head into Coquille. The grassy field will be down the hill on the right. If you're heading from the opposite direction, it'll be a left hand turn at the last traffic light (by the Safeway).

The Coquille Valley Farmers Market will be starting on Saturday, April 16th this year and running through October 8th. The market is open to the public from 9 am until 3 pm.

Ever since 2012, I've been a regular vendor at the Coos Bay Farmers Market on Wednesdays. Unfortunately, they've made some big changes to the market this year. As a result, I might not be a vendor there this year. We're still in the planning stages though, so I'm not completely certain. I'll post an update when I know for sure.

In addition to the farmers markets, there are several other festivals and craft fairs that I participate in throughout the year. For instance, I'm a big fan of the Green Acres Grange Hall's Flea Market & Craft Fair. They usually host 3-4 markets per year. I already participated in one last month. The next one will be May 6th and 7th (Friday and Saturday).

In addition to having dozens of booths to look at, the Green Acres Grange Hall has a small kitchen where you can buy a great lunch for a very reasonable price. I love it because I usually end up eating cold PB&J sandwiches when I set up my booth at all day farmers markets.

I'll continue to update this blog as I finalize my market plans for the 2016 season. I'm really looking forward to it!

As always, thank you for your continued support of my little crafting business. It means a lot to me.

Best wishes and happy spring!
